WATCH: Local 10 captures meteor streaks lighting up Miami sky

MIAMI — Early-morning meteor streaks briefly lit up the sky over Miami on Wednesday, giving viewers and Local 10 News staff an unexpected celestial show before sunrise.

The meteors were spotted in Miami during Local 10’s morning coverage and caught the attention of meteorologist Saira Anwer during her traffic report. Newscast director Darby Patton first noticed the activity and alerted the newsroom, allowing the station’s cameras and editors to capture the streaks live.

The display came as the region was already dealing with another hot and humid August morning. Temperatures across South Florida were in the low to mid-80s before sunrise, with heat indices already reaching the 90s.

Highs were expected to climb into the low 90s Wednesday, with feels-like temperatures reaching the triple digits. A heat advisory was in effect for Miami-Dade and Broward counties from noon until 7 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Local 10 meteorologist Julie Durda said calmer winds were expected to keep the day’s storm activity focused mainly over inland areas of Broward and Miami-Dade counties, particularly west of the Florida’s Turnpike. Areas closer to the coast, including locations near and east of Interstate 95, were expected to remain mostly dry.

The meteor activity was visible before dawn, when skies are dark enough for brighter meteors to stand out. About 30 to 40 meteors per hour can be seen during the peak of a strong meteor shower under favorable viewing conditions, though actual visibility depends on weather, light pollution and location.

For South Florida residents heading out for the day, however, the more immediate concern remained the heat.

Durda urged residents to take precautions as temperatures and humidity rise, particularly during the afternoon when the combination can produce dangerous heat conditions.
