Police urge ‘extreme caution’ after crocodile kills dog in South Miami

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. — South Miami police are warning residents and visitors to use “extreme caution” after they said a crocodile attacked and killed a dog Thursday.

Police said the fatal attack was reported in the 6200 block of Southwest 64th Court. They have not released any information about the dog at this time.

They said residents and visitors in the South Miami area are urged to keep children and pets away from canals, waterways, ponds and other areas where a crocodile may be present.

Police also warned the public not to approach, feed, harass or attempt to capture a nearby crocodile.

Crocodiles are protected under Florida and federal law.

Anyone who spots the animal should maintain a safe distance and report the sighting to the appropriate wildlife authorities, police said.

Police also urged residents to share the warning with neighbors, particularly those who have pets and live or walk in the area.
