Thousands of cinnamon rolls believed to be stolen were still inside courier’s vehicle. Here’s why

Julie Pierre, the 21-year-old owner of Roll and Dough Bakery in Sunrise, initially believed an Uber courier had stolen about $3,000 worth of cinnamon rolls she was sending to a farmers market.

Her story went viral on social media after she reported the rolls missing on Saturday.

But the courier never took off with the order.

A U.S. Border Patrol spokesperson identified the courier as Ivan Dario Rico Molano. According to the agency, he was arrested during a traffic stop in Hollywood.

A CBP spokesperson said Molano, a citizen of Colombia, admitted to being in the United States without legal authorization. Records indicate he entered the United States legally in May 2021 but remained beyond his authorized period of stay.

“We found out that he was pulled over in Hollywood by Border Patrol,” Pierre said. “When he was pulled over by Border Patrol, they called a family member and the family member was able to pick up the vehicle and the car still had the containers in the vehicle.”

Pierre said police contacted the courier’s family, who recovered the vehicle and found the cinnamon rolls still inside.

“Did the family member know there were cinnamon (rolls in there)?” asked Local 10’s Rosh Lowe. “How’d they find out?”

“So I think the police were the one who contacted his family,” Pierre said. “And they found the containers in them.”

The cinnamon rolls remained in containers in the vehicle, but Pierre said she would not take a chance on eating them.

Uber reimbursed Pierre for her loss, she said.

The case began earlier this week when Pierre said she had lost about $3,000 worth of cinnamon rolls after using Uber’s courier service to deliver them to a farmers market.

The order never arrived at its intended destination, prompting her to post about the incident on social media.

A police report was filed with the Sunrise Police Department, and a GoFundMe page was created to help Pierre cover the lost expenses.

The recovered cinnamon rolls, meanwhile, will not be sold.
