NMB Mayor Michael Joseph among Cherfilus-McCormick aides found in contempt of Congress

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Two allies of former U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick have been found in contempt of Congress.

A vote was held in the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, accusing North Miami Beach Mayor Michael Joseph and Hector Roos, who previously worked on Cherfilus-McCormick’s congressional campaigns, of failing to comply with multiple subpoenas.

The matter has since been referred to the U.S. Justice Department in regard to possible criminal prosecution.

Convictions for contempt of Congress can carry a fine of up to $100,000 and a one-year prison sentence.

Cherfilus-McCormick resigned from Congress in April, shortly before the House Ethics Committee was set to vote on her possible expulsion.

That was after the committee found her guilty of 25 ethics and campaign finance violations.

Cherfilus-McCormick is accused of stealing or misusing around $5 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds that were intended for a healthcare business run by her family.

She previously pled not guilty to criminal charges related to the relief funds.

Tuesday’s vote was held verbally, meaning there are no records of the lawmakers’ individual votes.
