Substitute teacher arrested after loaded gun found in her backpack at Hialeah school, police say

HIALEAH, Fla. — A substitute teacher was arrested Tuesday after she brought a loaded gun to Westland Senior High School in Hialeah, authorities said.

According to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, a teacher found an unattended bookbag in the auditorium of the school, located at 4000 W. 18^th Ave., and searched it, trying to locate an ID. Instead, the teacher found a loaded 9 mm Walther handgun, the report stated.

Police said the teacher immediately took the backpack to the principal’s office and the principal notified the school resource officer.

According to the report, the officer searched the backpack and found a passport ID inside a wallet that belonged to Chenelle Antonette Doctor, 27, of Hollywood.

Police said Doctor is a substitute teacher employed by Kelly Services who was working on the high school campus Tuesday.

Doctor was then located and taken into custody, authorities said.

Police said Doctor spontaneously told the arresting officer that she forgot to take her gun out of her backpack that morning.

According to the report, the gun had a round in the chamber and a magazine inserted with seven live rounds. An empty magazine was also located in the backpack, authorities said.

Doctor was arrested on a charge of possession of a firearm on school property.

As of Wednesday morning, Doctor was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $2,500 bond.
