Cargo plane crashes after going off Miami International Airport runway

MIAMI — First responders rushed to a scene just outside Miami International Airport following an aircraft emergency on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, a Boeing 767 cargo plane overran the runway at MIA around 2 p.m.

The flight originated from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, officials said.

According to officials with MIA, it was Prime Air flight 7598 that was disabled after going off the northwest end of the airport’s diagonal runway.

A ground stop was issued, and all runways were closed following the crash.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said several vehicles were struck by the plane near the 2100 block of Northwest 42nd Avenue.

Plumes of black smoke could be seen coming from the plane as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

MDFR said there were multiple people who were injured but did not elaborate on the extent of those injuries.

Officials also said that over 60 MDFR units were responding to the scene.

The FAA said it will be investigating the circumstances that led to the plane going off the runway.
