Museum of Discovery and Science, Broward libraries bring hands-on learning to communities

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — The Museum of Discovery and Science and Broward County Library are bringing hands-on learning and character development to communities across Broward County through Character Corners, an initiative inspired by MODS’ Build a Better World: The Future Begins with You exhibit.

The program, which event organizers say was made possible by Lilly Endowment Inc., features interactive Character Corners at seven regional Broward County libraries and Book Nooks at all 36 library branches.

The program is designed for young learners up to the age of 6 and their caregivers to learn, explore and problem solve together.

MODS and Broward County Library will launch the initiative with a ribbon-cutting celebration from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 24 at the Broward County Main Library in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The Character Corners focus on four skills: critical thinking, which builds curiosity; caring, which builds kindness; confidence, which builds motivation; and cooperation, which builds teamwork.

The seven Character Corners are:

• Broward County Main Library
• African-American Research Library and Cultural Center
• West Regional Library
• South Regional Library
• Southwest Regional Library
• North Regional Library
• Northwest Regional Library.

Book Nooks at all 36 library branches feature stories focused on the same four skills, with selections refreshed every three months. Themes rotate between critical thinking, caring, confidence and cooperation throughout the year.

“Character Corners take the spirit of discovery beyond the walls of MODS and places meaningful learning experiences directly into neighborhoods throughout Broward County,” said Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of MODS.

The initiative extends the impact of Build a Better World: The Future Begins with You, which explores how individual choices, character strengths and collective action can help create stronger, more resilient communities.
