MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. \u2014 Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik said Tuesday he is encouraged by the early progress of quarterback Malik Willis, praising both his athletic ability and leadership as the team continues offseason workouts.<\/p>\n

Slowik described Willis as a \u201creally talented individual\u201d capable of making throws all over the field while also creating plays with his legs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I\u2019ve enjoyed the most so far is getting to know him,\u201d Slowik said. \u201cThe person is really fun to be around. He\u2019s really energetic. He infuses everybody with a lot of energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Willis, who was acquired this offseason after revitalizing his career as a backup with the Green Bay Packers, is trying to earn the trust of his coaches and teammates as he tries to earn the team\u2019s starting quarterback job. <\/p>\n

Slowik said the offensive staff is currently focused more on fundamentals than scheme installation during the early stages of organized team activities.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always a balance,\u201d Slowik said of building an offense. \u201cWe have some core beliefs and fundamentals that we really want to make sure we do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Slowik emphasized his desire to keep defenses off balance through a physical rushing attack and varied offensive looks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe in running the football,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of different ways to attack people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Much of Tuesday\u2019s session centered on Miami\u2019s revamped offensive line, including first round offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor, who will start off playing left guard. Slowik repeatedly highlighted Proctor\u2019s rare combination of size and athleticism.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe might be one of the biggest individuals I\u2019ve ever seen in my life,\u201d Slowik said with a laugh. \u201cHis legs are bigger than me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The coordinator added that Proctor\u2019s footwork and movement skills could allow him to play multiple positions along the line while staying on the left side.<\/p>\n

Miami also hopes Willis\u2019 mobility paired with running back De\u2019Von Achane can create problems for opposing defenses.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnytime you have a quarterback who has the ability to run, it makes it 11 versus 11, as opposed to 11 on 10,\u201d Slowik said. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely a weapon and it\u2019s a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Slowik also addressed the departure of receiver Jaylen Waddle, who was traded to the Denver Broncos earlier this offseason.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving Jaylen Waddle here was awesome. I enjoyed working with him,\u201d Slowik said. \u201cI think he\u2019s going to tear it up in Denver, but I\u2019m really locked in on who\u2019s on our current roster.\u201d<\/p>\n

Willis is set to throw to a wide receiver room that includes Tutu Atwell, Jalen Tolbert, Malik Washington and rookie third-round pick Caleb Douglas. The Dolphins are also hoping to get contributions from another third-round receiver, Chris Bell, who participated in stretches before working out on the side during drills at the Dolphins\u2019 rookie minicamp.<\/p>\n

As Miami continues offseason practices, Slowik said the coaching staff is evaluating how to maximize the strengths of both veterans and rookies while refining fundamentals before training camp begins.<\/p>\n
