U.S. Central Command said Friday that its forces have disabled two more Iranian tankers that were trying to breach an American blockade on Iran\u2019s ports \u2014 the latest strain on the war\u2019s shaky ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Hours earlier, the U.S. said it thwarted attacks on three Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz and retaliated against Iranian military facilities. Washington, meanwhile, awaits a response from Tehran in negotiations to end the war.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said he told U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday that Europe needs the United States, and vice versa, as America\u2019s top diplomat wrapped up two days of fence-mending talks in Italy and the Vatican following weeks of tensions over the U.S.-Israeli war in Iran.<\/p>\n

Tajani reaffirmed strong transatlantic ties and said he hoped \u201ctensions have been calmed\u201d with Rubio\u2019s visit.<\/p>\n

Here’s the latest:<\/p>\n

Democrats had hoped to win as many as 4 additional US House seats under Virginia\u2019s redrawn map<\/p>\n

Don Scott, the Democratic speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, said Democrats respect the court\u2019s opinion while noting the voters of the state had approved of the new congressional map.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe gave this decision to the voters \u2014 exactly where it belongs \u2014 and they spoke loud and clear,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cThey voted YES because they wanted to fight back against the Trump power grab.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi criticizes recent US military actions against Iran<\/p>\n

He said \u201cevery time a diplomatic solution is on the table, the U.S. opts for a reckless military adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a post on X, Araghchi said \u201cIranians never bow to pressure\u201d and questioned whether the U.S. actions were a crude pressure tactic or the result of \u201ca spoiler once again duping POTUS.\u201d<\/p>\n

Araghchi also boasted that Iran\u2019s missile inventory and launch capacity was at \u201c120%\u201d of prewar levels, attaching a screenshot from a U.S. newspaper report that said the CIA had found Iran managed to retain more of its weaponry after the U.S.-Israeli bombing campaign than previously thought.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry says the US strikes were a \u2018clear violation\u2019 of the ceasefire<\/p>\n

The violence came as Washington awaited a response from Tehran in negotiations to end the war. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters he expects to hear from Iran later Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope it\u2019s a serious offer,\u201d Rubio told reporters. \u201cI really do.\u201d<\/p>\n

US military shows smoking oil freighters in latest confrontation with Iran<\/p>\n

The U.S. military posted video of two Iranian oil tankers as their smokestacks were struck by an American fighter jet Friday, marking the latest confrontation between the U.S. and Iran.<\/p>\n

Both countries exchanged fire off Iran\u2019s coast on Thursday as U.S. Navy warships passed through the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. also disabled another Iranian ship earlier this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cU.S. forces in the Middle East remain committed to full enforcement of the blockade of vessels entering or leaving Iran,\u201d Adm. Brad Cooper, the leader of U.S. Central Command, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Virginia Supreme Court strikes down Democrats\u2019 redistricting plan, dimming party\u2019s midterm hopes<\/p>\n

The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday struck down the voter-approved Democratic congressional redistricting plan, delivering another major setback to the party in a nationwide battle against Republicans for an edge in this year\u2019s midterm elections.<\/p>\n

The court ruled the state\u2019s Democratic-led legislature violated procedural requirements when it placed the constitutional amendment on the ballot to authorize the mid-decade redistricting. Voters narrowly approved the amendment April 21, but the court\u2019s ruling renders the results of that vote meaningless.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis violation irreparably undermines the integrity of the resulting referendum vote and renders it null and void,\u201d the court said in its opinion.<\/p>\n

In the social media post on Friday, it says a U.S. Navy fighter jet fired into the smoke stacks of ships in the Gulf of Oman after they tried to pull into an Iranian port.<\/p>\n

The newly unveiled website housing documents on UFOs has a decidedly retro feel<\/p>\n

It features black-and-white military imagery of flying objects displayed prominently on the page, with statements displayed in typewriter-like font.<\/p>\n

The first release includes 162 files, such as old State Department cables, FBI documents and transcripts from NASA of crewed flights into space.<\/p>\n

One document details an FBI interview with someone identified as a drone pilot who, in September 2023, reported seeing a \u201clinear object\u201d with a light bright enough to \u201csee bands within the light\u201d in the sky.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe object was visible for five to ten seconds and then the light went out and the object vanished,\u201d according to the FBI interview.<\/p>\n

Another file is a NASA photograph from the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, showing three dots in a triangular formation. The Pentagon says in an accompanying caption that \u201cthere is no consensus about the nature of the anomaly\u201d but that a new, preliminary analysis indicated that it could be a \u201cphysical object.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Rubio said the U.S. believed it could still have a \u201cproductive and fruitful and important relationship\u201d with the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president will always speak clearly about how he feels about the U.S. and U.S. policy,\u201d Rubio said. \u201cThe president of the United States is always going to act in what\u2019s in the best interest of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubio came to Rome after Trump repeatedly criticized Leo\u2019s calls for peace and dialogue. The back and forth that ensued riled Italian leaders who came to Leo\u2019s defense.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president\u2019s perspective is clear. He thinks that Iran is a threat, and it needs to be addressed. And that position remains unchanged,\u201d Rubio said.<\/p>\n

The secretary of state, traveling in Italy, said the U.S. is anticipating a response from Iran on the ongoing diplomatic discussions sometime later Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should know something today,\u201d Rubio, who doubles as the White House national security adviser, told reporters.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI hope it\u2019s a serious offer. I really do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judge rules Trump administration\u2019s cancellation of humanities grants was unconstitutional<\/p>\n

The Trump administration\u2019s cancellation of more than $100 million in humanities grants to scholars, writers, research groups and other organizations was unconstitutional, and the Department of Government Efficiency had no authority to end the funding, a federal judge in New York ruled on Thursday.<\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon in Manhattan sided with The Authors Guild, several other groups and several people who had their grants canceled and sued DOGE and the National Endowment for the Humanities. McMahon permanently barred the administration from terminating the grants and criticized DOGE\u2019s use of artificial intelligence in nixing the funding.<\/p>\n

Government lawyers had argued that the cuts of more than 1,400 grants of congressionally approved funds were legal moves to implement President Donald Trump\u2019s directives, eliminate grants associated with diversion, equity and inclusion and reduce discretionary spending under the administration\u2019s priorities.<\/p>\n

The White House and Department of Justice, which defended against the lawsuit, did not immediately return emails seeking comment Thursday evening. It was not immediately clear if an appeal was planned.<\/p>\n

A federal court ruled Thursday against the new global tariffs that Trump imposed after a stinging loss at the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

A split three-judge panel of the Court of International Trade in New York found the 10% global tariffs were illegal after small businesses sued.<\/p>\n

The court ruled 2-1 that Trump overstepped the tariff power that Congress had allowed the president under the law. The tariffs are \u201cinvalid\u2033 and \u201cunauthorized by law,\u201d the majority wrote.<\/p>\n

The third judge on the panel found the law allows the president more leeway on tariffs.<\/p>\n

If the administration appeals Thursday\u2019s decision, as expected, it would first turn to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, based in Washington, and then, potentially, the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

At issue are temporary 10% worldwide tariffs the Trump administration imposed after the Supreme Court in February struck down even broader tariffs the president had imposed last year on almost every country on Earth. The new tariffs were set to expire July 24.<\/p>\n

The Iran war\u2019s shaky ceasefire was further strained on Friday as the United Arab Emirates responded to a missile and drone strike, hours after the U.S. said it thwarted attacks on three Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz and retaliated against Iranian military facilities.<\/p>\n

There were no immediate reports of damage in the UAE.<\/p>\n

Iran and the U.S. are trading blows as their negotiators are seeking a deal to end the fighting, but so far they\u2019ve avoided a return to all-out fighting. It\u2019s not clear how close the two sides are to a deal on issues like Iran\u2019s nuclear program, which the U.S. and Israel vowed to halt when they launched the war on Feb. 28, or the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that Iran has all but closed in a bid to pressure the global economy.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Tehran said it was examining the latest U.S. proposals for ending the war delivered to it via Pakistan, which is serving as a mediator.<\/p>\n
