A 4-year-old boy drowned on June 19 in a pool in North Lauderdale.

More children ages 1 to 4 die from drowning than any other cause of death, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Some of the ways to reduce the risk include formal swimming lessons for kids and installing a four-sided fence that is at least four feet high and fully encloses the house pool.

The Red Cross has educational resources for children and their caregivers.

The Florida Department of Health in Broward County has a voucher program to cover the cost of lessons for children as young as babies and as old as 17. For more information, visit this page.
