Man arrested after striking police vehicle while fleeing Hallandale Beach officer, cops say

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — Police in Hallandale Beach arrested a 21-year-old man accused of fleeing from a police officer after striking his vehicle.

According to authorities, an HBPD officer was patrolling the 1700 block of East Hallandale Beach Blvd. on Saturday around 9:22 p.m. in his fully marked police cruiser when he saw what he described as a suspicious vehicle near a business that was not open.

When the officer approached the vehicle, police said the driver, who has since been identified in jail records as Mohammad Chehade, put his car in reverse, striking the police vehicle, before taking off.

As the officer pursued Chehade, police said he made several attempts to use his car to strike the officer’s cruiser and made contact with it at least one additional time.

Authorities said the officer was not injured but his vehicle sustained approximately $5,000 worth of damage.

Police said the pursuit ended when Chehade crashed his vehicle along the 900 block of North Ocean Drive in Hollywood. He was taken into custody several blocks away from the crash scene after initially fleeing on foot, authorities said.

Chehade is facing charges of aggravated fleeing with injury or damage, aggravated battery on a police officer and resisting an officer without violence. As of Sunday afternoon, he was being held at the Broward Main Jail without bond.
