Early voting turnout in Broward County lower than anticipated

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Voters were seen dropping off ballots on Monday at Broward County elections headquarters in Fort Lauderdale.

“It is too late to mail your vote by mail ballot, so if you want to turn it in, it has to be at one of our offices in Broward County,” said Broward Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott.

Early and mail-in ballots are already being tabulated ahead of Tuesday’s primary election.

“The equipment is running great, we haven’t had complaints this time around,” he said.

But the turnout so far in Broward County has been low, according to Scott.

“Turnout for this election has been very slow, surprisingly slow,” he said. “With some of the really active contests that were happening that were pretty high profile, I’m surprised that more people didn’t turn out.”

Although Florida has a closed primary, meaning you can only vote for candidates of your own party, in Broward County there are still nonpartisan races that all voters can cast ballots for, as well as those with no party affiliation, like seats on the Broward County School Board.

And as always, while it’s important to check your sample ballot because districts have been redrawn, Scott said your voting precinct should stay the same.

“Your voting location on Election Day is going to be exactly the same as it was before this,” said Scott. “The changes of the map does not necessairally change your precinct.”
