Man accused of stealing BMW, shooting into mother’s home during break-in attempt

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — A 29-year-old man is facing carjacking, armed burglary and attempted murder charges after allegedly stealing a BMW from a local dealership and then driving to his mother’s home, where he tried to break in and opened fire, according to police.

Khalil Rashad Smith was arrested Monday evening after a felony traffic stop, the Pembroke Pines Police Department said.

According to the arrest form, Smith showed up at BMW of Pembroke Pines on Sheridan Street around 11:55 a.m.

He asked to see a blue-gray BMW M440i, and a dealership employee obliged, first photocopying Smith’s Florida ID for the sales file. Once Smith got behind the wheel and had the key in hand, he shoved the employee in the abdomen, closed the door and drove off — circling the lot briefly before speeding out, police said.

About half an hour later, at 12:28 p.m., officers said they received a call about shots fired at a nearby home. Surveillance video reportedly caught Smith backing the stolen BMW into the driveway, hopping a chain-link fence into the backyard, and heading straight for a set of glass French doors that led into the master bedroom.

When he found them locked, police say he raised a handgun and fired several rounds into the door before retreating to the car and driving away.

Police later identified the home as belonging to Smith’s mother. Investigators said she’ had kicked him out about a month earlier due to ongoing conflicts over his behavior, and told authorities he no longer had permission to be there. She told detectives he’d struggled with anger issues since being “kicked out” of the Navy in November 2025.

Officers tracked the BMW and pulled it over. Smith was found with a tan-and-black .22-caliber handgun — its magazine empty and slide locked back, consistent with all rounds having been fired. Investigators later recovered 10 spent .22-caliber shell casings at the shooting scene, matching the gun.

Smith faces three felony counts: carjacking without a firearm, armed burglary of a dwelling, and attempted first-degree premeditated murder.

Smith went before a judge on Tuesday and is currently being held at the Broward Main Jail on no bond.
