Man accused of causing crash, pulling out gun in southwest Miami-Dade

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 54-year-old man was arrested Monday after deputies said he caused a traffic crash in southwest Miami-Dade and then pulled a gun out in front of another driver.

According to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened at about 9:10 a.m. Monday along Southwest 137^th Avenue near Southwest 120^th Street.

The victim told deputies he was traveling north on Southwest 137th Avenue and attempting to change lanes when traffic caused his vehicle to become stopped at an angle in front of the suspect’s vehicle.

According to the report, the suspect, Carlos Mario Acosta drove extremely close to the rear driver’s side of the victim’s vehicle. When the traffic light turned green, Acosta attempted to pass the victim and sideswiped another vehicle, authorities said.

The victim told investigators he was unsure whether his own vehicle had been involved in the collision, so he looked through the side mirror to check for damage.

According to the report, Acosta then approached the victim’s vehicle and began pulling on the door handle.

Investigators said Acosta then ran in front of the victim’s vehicle, lifted his shirt and revealed a handgun while gripping the weapon. He then returned to his vehicle and put the gun back inside, according to the report.

After being read his Miranda rights, Acosta agreed to speak with investigators and provided a different account of how the confrontation began, the report stated.

According to the report, Acosta told deputies that after the crash, the victim approached his vehicle, so he had his gun ready because he did not know the victim’s intentions.

The report stated that Acosta claimed the victim then returned to his vehicle and attempted to drive away. Acosta said he positioned himself in front of the vehicle to prevent the man from leaving, authorities said.

Investigators also noted in the arrest report that Acosta told responding deputies that he had gripped the gun over his shirt while standing in front of the victim’s car.

Acosta was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm and transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

His vehicle, meanwhile, was turned over to his wife, Yezenia Acosta, deputies confirmed.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Carlos Acosta remained held at TGK on a $3,000 bond.
