Mother of teen shot says girl’s ex-boyfriend is who opened fire: ‘Saying if I can’t have you, nobody will’

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Family members of a teenage girl who was injured in a shooting are grateful things didn’t end up worse.

That 15-year-old girl, Kamani Brown, has been hospitalized with serious injuries since the gunfire erupted outside her home.

It happened around 3:45 a.m. Saturday along the 1700 block of Northwest Ninth Street in Fort Lauderdale.

“It was nerve-wracking,” said Kahadeja McCray, Brown’s mother. “I was shocked at first because I heard the gunshots outside, but I didn’t know if she was outside. And then when she came in the house and said she had been shot, it was just a whole bunch of blood everywhere.”

McCray said prior to the gunfire, her daughter was inside with a friend doing each other’s hair.

She said Brown’s ex-boyfriend had been threatening the girl on the phone.

“Saying if I can’t have you, nobody will,” McCray said.

That ex-boyfriend is who allegedly came to the house on Saturday morning.

“When she turned, she just seen him and somebody else coming towards,” McCray said.

A bullet went through Brown’s arm, hitting an artery and causing the teen to lose a significant amount of blood.

Her friend was credited with applying pressure until paramedics could rush Brown to a nearby hospital.

“I want him to go to jail, because I don’t know what mentality you’re thinking at a young 16 years old, that you had a right to shoot at somebody, let alone want to take their life,” said McCray.

As Brown continues to recover, her mother, brother and grandmother remain by her side as she continues to heal.

“You know, there’s a high power,” said Cynthia Husband, Brown’s grandmother. “We believe in God, we pray constantly and we know this is his blessing, his will.”

Local 10 News reached out to Fort Lauderdale police to see if an arrest has been made or for any updates on the case, but have not heard back as of the time of this story’s publication.
