Vigil held for mother, daughter killed in Margate lightning strike

MARGATE, Fla. — A candlelight vigil was held Saturday in honor of a mother and her young daughter.

Kenya Glasgow and 2-year-old Kennedi Glasgow were killed by lightning Sunday afternoon in Margate.

First responders tried their best to revive the mother and daughter, but it was too late as they were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Kameron Glasgow, Kenya’s husband and Kennedi’s father, were steps away when it happened.

Kameron Glasgow said he had Kennedi’s twin sister Kensli when lighting struck Kenya and Kennedi.

The family of four were rushing into a relative’s house along the 7900 block of Northwest First Street for dinner, trying to beat a rainstorm.

It’s been six days and the tragedy has shaken many in the Margate community to its core.

At the vigil, Kameron Glasgow was surrounded by friends, family and loved ones.

“This is the longest I went without hearing her voice,” he said. “It’s going to take some time. It’s going to take a lot of time because it’s all I know. We basically we grew up together.”

Glasgow said the last several days have been an emotional rollercoaster, but the support from the people in that room and beyond will be enough to get him through.

“I feel the outpouring of love from everywhere,” he said. “That’s what keeps me going and my daughter is what keeps me going.”

Despite the tragedy, the purpose of the vigil was to focus on the memories that Kennedi and Kenya left behind to the ones who knew and loved them so much.

During the vigil, one by one, everyone was able to release their emotions and share stories, including Kenya’s parents.

“I’m hurt,” said Adrian Moore, Kenya’s mother. “I prayed for her and I told god when you give me her, give me the wisdom and the understanding to get through life and I did. Thirty-one, I wish I had longer.”

“I did anything when it came to her,” said Willie Pickett, Kenya’s father. “One day, she asked me, ‘Dad, what’s happening with the money.’ I said you brought these two girls along. They’re getting your money now. It’s the end of the line for you.”

Celebration of life services are expected to take place next weekend, though details are still being finalized.
