Overnight crash shuts down major Sunrise intersection, temporarily knocks out power to thousands

SUNRISE, Fla. — Power has been restored in Sunrise after an overnight crash involving two cars knocked out electricity and left a major intersection closed on Saturday.

It happened at University Drive and Northwest 25th Court, where two vehicles were badly damaged.

Police tape remained in place around the intersection, with debris scattered across the roadway and into the nearby Shell gas station.

Authorities said least one of the cars reportedly struck a utility pole, knocking out power to the area. As many as 33,700 customers were reported without electricity following the crash.

Florida Power & Light officials said crews restored power about 90 minutes later, but crews remained at the scene Saturday morning as authorities continued their investigation.

The intersection remained shut down from University Drive toward Sunset Strip, causing significant traffic backups and delays. Drivers were navigating through the nearby plaza to get around the closure.

Authorities urged drivers in the area to seek alternate routes while the investigation and cleanup continued.
