MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A cargo plane overshot Miami International Airport’s runway 30 on Sunday afternoon and crashed into a van, a fence, a sports utility vehicle, and a second fence, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said the Boeing 767-300 on Prime Air Flight 798 for Amazon struck a white 2012 Ford E-150 Econoline van inside MIA and a Toyota Corolla Cross LE that was on Northwest 67th Avenue outside of MIA.
“The recovery of victims is most important,” Homendy said.
Five people died, and five were injured, including three whose condition was critical. Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said deputies were working to identify the victims.
The Boeing 767-300, which was manufactured in 1994, had departed with two crew members from San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and the NTSB.
A witness’s video shows there were stormy clouds when the plane landed on the runway shortly before 2 p.m. on Sunday. Homendy said the plane traveled for 1,300 feet past the paved surface.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue deployed more than 60 units. Dark smoke billowed from the crash site. Firefighters reported using foam to help extinguish the flames in the engine compartment.
“We had a very complex fire,” Miami-Dade Fire Chief Raied “Ray” Jadallah said on Sunday.

Jadallah said firefighters rescued the pilot and co-pilot, who were trapped in the cockpit. Rohan Ellis, a witness, shared a video showing them getting out through a window.
Fire rescue personnel took the injured to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center and the Jackson South Medical Center.
Homendy said the five dead were in the vehicles. The Econoline van, she said, was “torn apart.” She added that the crash site was still not safe on Monday afternoon.
“There is fuel everywhere. That will have to be remediated, but then they are also removing fuel from the aircraft, so we have to allow that to occur,” Homendy said.
Two of Miami International Airport’s four runways remained closed on Monday afternoon, according to Greg Chin, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.
