Miami-Dade man accused of beating daughter, 5, with squeegee over ‘poor behavior in school’

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A Miami-Dade father was arrested Tuesday after deputies said he allegedly beat his 5-year-old daughter with a plastic bathroom squeegee.

Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 44-year-old Yoanny Herrera Nieblas.

Deputies said the incident happened Sept. 8 at his home in the 14900 block of Southwest 53rd Lane in the county’s Kendall West neighborhood.

While conducting a child abuse investigation, deputies determined that the girl was at home taking a shower when Herrera Nieblas entered the bathroom and confronted her about her “poor behavior in school,” according to an arrest report obtained by Local 10 News on Thursday.

Herrera Nieblas then “proceeded to utilize the plastic bathroom squeegee to strike the victim multiple times on the buttocks,” the report states.

As a result, the girl sustained visible bruising to her buttocks that was present for more than three days, according to the report.

After being advised of his Miranda rights, Herrera Nieblas told investigators that his daughter had “ongoing behavioral issues in school,” according to the report.

He told investigators that the school had recently notified him that his daughter “stuck her middle finger up to the teacher.” During bath time, he also asked her about the incident, and she admitted what she had done, according to the report.

The report states Herrera Nieblas told investigators he had tried “verbally discipling” the girl multiple times but had not observed a change in her behavior. That was when he “escalated the discipline to spanking her with the plastic bathroom squeegee,” according to deputies.

Jail records show he is facing one count of child abuse with no great bodily harm.

As of Thursday morning, Herrera Nieblas was no longer listed as an inmate on the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation website. His bond information wasn’t immediately available.
