MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Florida House of Representatives District 106, a coastal legislative district in northeast Miami-Dade County, is up for election in November.

Lucia Báez-Geller, a former Miami-Dade County School Board member, is challenging Republican Florida Rep. Fabián Basabe, the incumbent, a former reality TV star who was found liable after two men accused him of sexual battery.
“I have made a lot of really powerful enemies,” Basabe, 48, said without naming them. “This has been lawfare, which is the new campaign today, right? I mean, you want to get somebody out of the way, you don’t need bullets anymore. You just need character assassination.”
In July, a Leon County jury awarded Nicolas Frevola, Basabe’s former aide, and Jacob Cutbirth, a former intern, $450,000 in damages after finding Basabe liable for sexually harassing, battering, and defaming them.
“I think the residents of 106 are ready to turn the page on all the chaos, all the confusion, all the scandals,” said Báez-Geller, a former Miami Beach Senior High School teacher.
