Driver arrested after woman falls from trunk of speeding vehicle in Miami-Dade, deputies say

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 28-year-old man was arrested over the weekend after Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office investigators said a woman fell from the trunk of his speeding vehicle and struck her head on the roadway.

According to an arrest report, Ismel Baro-Rodriguez, of southwest Miami-Dade, was arrested Saturday on a charge of aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm.

Deputies said they were dispatched to the area of 26601 S. Dixie Highway at about 8:40 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report that a woman had fallen from a moving vehicle.

When a deputy arrived, he found the woman lying face down in the roadway, the report stated.

According to the report, the victim was transported to Jackson South Medical Center in critical condition. She was in a coma and considered brain dead at the time the arrest report was written, authorities said.

According to the report, investigators reviewed surveillance video from the scene that they said showed Baro-Rodriguez and the victim arriving at the location.

Moments later, the woman was seen on the trunk of the vehicle, according to the report.

Investigators said the vehicle then accelerated at a high rate of speed, causing the woman to fall off and strike her head on the concrete.

The driver then fled in the vehicle in a southeastern direction, the report stated.

Investigators said they later located the vehicle at Baro-Rodriguez’s home, where he was detained.

Baro-Rodriguez was transported to the MDSO South District station. According to the arrest report, after being read his Miranda rights, he provided investigators with a full confession.

Baro-Rodriguez was arrested and transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

As of Tuesday morning, the Cuban national was being held at the Metrowest Detention Center on the aggravated battery charge as well as on an immigration hold.
