MIRAMAR, Fla. — Some Miramar residents who use recreational vehicles as parked homes could face an initial fine and a daily fine if a new ban passes on Wednesday night.

To create more affordable housing and additional income, commissioners say some residents have even been using RVs as rental properties.

Daniel Castillo isn’t one of them, but he has two RVs. He said a Miramar code enforcement officer told him that he couldn’t have an RV in front of the house.

“I told him that I sold it and the RV is going to be leaving the property,” Castillo said.

Miramar Commissioner Yvette Colbourne was the first to propose a measure to add new parking restrictions on RVs in residential zones.

“This is a quality of life issue for our residents, so they have brought it to us,” Colbourne told commissioners.

Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss and his leadership focused on dozens of parked RVs that officials say should not be hooked up to sewer lines.

Mayor Wayne M. Messam, Vice Mayor Carson “Eddy” Edwards, and Commissioners Maxwell B. Chambers and Avril Cherasard have expressed support.

The ordinance’s first reading passed on April 22. The second reading was on May 20. It was set to continue after the commission meets at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at City Hall, at 2300 Civic Center Place.
