Colombians head to the polls during polarized runoff presidential election

MIAMI — Colombians head to the polls to cast their ballots on Sunday, as they vote for a new president during a runoff election.

Their choice is between Iván Cepeda, who has the endorsement of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, and Abelardo de la Espriella, who has the endorsement of President Donald Trump.

De la Espriella, a defense attorney who has campaigned as “The Tiger,” had 43.73% of the votes when he qualified for the runoff against Cepeda, who had 40.91% of the votes.

De La Espriella, a fan of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, and Cepeda, a rival of former President Álvaro Uribe, have deep disagreements about continuing peace talks with armed groups.

Polls in Colombia and around the world open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Colombian consulate in Coral Gables has a voting precinct at the University of Miami’s Watsco Center at 1245 Dauer Drive.

In Miami-Dade County, there were also assigned precincts at Miami Dade College’s Kendall campus gymnasium, at 11011 SW 104 St.; and at the Milander Center for Arts and Entertainment, at 4800 Palm Ave., in Hialeah.

In Broward County, there were also assigned precincts at Coral Springs High School, at 7201 West Sample Road, and Cypress Bay High School’s gymnasium, at 18600 Vista Park Boulevard, in Weston.
