Phil Ehr, a retired U.S. Navy commander who is running for congressional district 28, partnered with the local nonprofit Global Empowerment Mission to collect aid.
Ehr and his campaign team were welcoming donations at their office at 143 North Flagler Ave., near the Homestead City Hall.
The list of items needed included first aid kits; emergency gear such as flashlights, heavy-duty batteries, solar phone chargers, and work gloves; and baby care, such as diapers.

Ehr was also welcoming nonperishable foods, new sleeping bags, new inflatable mattresses, new backpacks, and new pillows.
Volunteers at the GEM warehouse were packing boxes of donations on Thursday afternoon to prepare deliveries.
