Police said it happened at around 9:30 a.m. while the bus was in the area of Abbott Avenue and Indian Creek Drive on North Beach.

According to an arrest report, the victim told officers that after he got on the bus, he saw a man, later identified as Demetrius Jerrell Byrd, “screaming and yelling at other passengers on the bus.”

Police said the man tried to have a “conversation” with Byrd in an attempt “to possibly calm him down,” but at one point told Byrd to “shut up.”

“This led Mr. Byrd to take out a silver multi-tool from his pocket and open it to one of the tools that appeared to be a blade,” a Miami Beach police officer wrote in the arrest report.

According to the report, he then walked toward the man with the blade and asked, “Who wants to die today?”

Police said they found the blade in Byrd’s pocket after patting him down and arrested him on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where records show he was being held on a $5,000 bond and a domestic violence warrant as of late Tuesday morning.
