Pompano Beach has its own fire rescue department, but commissioners found that starting a law enforcement agency was too expensive.
“It was the cost and the skillset to do it. With BSO, we have specialty crews that can help us with anything, drugs, prostitution, crime of any kind, helicopters, we have a lot of support through BSO,” Pompano Beach Commissioner Darlene Smith said. “We wouldn’t have that, at least at the beginning, with our own police force.”

With their 4-2 vote on Tuesday evening, city leaders moved to finalize a new three-year contract that includes a 5% rate increase cap each year and a 90-day get-out clause for both sides.
The new contract with BSO will cost $71 million next fiscal year.
Smith said it would take about three years to get a new police force going. Commissioners voted unanimously to accept the new contract with a 5% rate increase cap each year, and a 90-day get-out clause for both sides.
