Flight full of relief items set to take off from Opa-locka bound for Colombia

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. — Search operations continue in Colombia nearly one week after a powerful earthquake shook the nation.

The death toll has risen to over 290 people, with 140 still missing and nearly 4,000 injured.

A relief flight is taking off from South Florida on Sunday, sending much-needed supplies to survivors.

The pilot, Juan Rojas, is making his second flight back to Colombia, this time carrying about 2,000 pounds of medical supplies.

“We’re aiming to go to three cities,” he said. “This airplane is going to head down to Pereira, which is super close to the center of all the damage, one of the cities that has suffered the most. We’re gonna center most of this help to them. Then tomorrow we’re taking seven doctors to Quibo.”

Organizers said a portion of the supplies will help children who are in one of the hardest hit areas of Colombia.

“The idea is to not only use the plane to bring the assistance to Pereia, but also Quibo, and do that local flight to move rescuers from one city to the other,” said Help Land Foundation Founder Ender Urdaneta.
