‘Brazilian doctor’ accused of stealing from passengers’ luggage at Miami International Airport, deputies say

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 68-year-old man was arrested Sunday, days after investigators said he was caught on surveillance video repeatedly taking luggage from baggage carousels at Miami International Airport, removing items from the bags and then returning for more.

An arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect, Marcos Danilo Assuncao-Oliveira, as a doctor from Brazil, however it also lists his current address as “homeless” in Miami.

Brazilian medical websites list a person with the same name as a gynecologist who works in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

According to deputies, Assuncao-Oliveira is accused of targeting several pieces of luggage in the American Airlines baggage claim area last Friday.

Investigators said surveillance video showed Assuncao-Oliveira loitering around the baggage claim before removing bags from different carousels over a short period of time.

According to the report, Assuncao-Oliveira would take one piece of luggage at a time, open it and remove items he wanted. Investigators said he would then return to the baggage carousels, select another bag and repeat the process.

Authorities said he did this several times before leaving the area on foot with the items he had taken.

Investigators have so far identified three victims and estimated the combined value of their stolen property at approximately $1,350, according to the report.

Authorities said several additional potential victims have not yet been identified.

The arrest report also states that Assuncao-Oliveira had no active flights with American Airlines during the previous six months.

The information provided in the arrest report did not specify the items that were allegedly taken from the bags.

Assuncao-Oliveira was taken into custody Sunday on three counts of third-degree grand theft.

As of Monday afternoon, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $2,500 bond.
