1 dead after Tri-Rail train collides with SUV in Oakland Park

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. — A man was killed Wednesday morning after a Tri-Rail train collided with an SUV in Oakland Park, according to authorities.

Oakland Park Fire Rescue officials said the train struck the SUV and pushed it approximately 200 to 300 yards down the tracks. The driver of the SUV, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials with the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority told Local 10 News that the southbound Tri-Rail train with no passengers onboard was heading to a maintenance yard when it struck the SUV at Oakland Park Boulevard around 10:20 a.m.

Officials said a bus bridge has been set up to transport passengers between the Cypress Creek and Fort Lauderdale stations, and train service delays are expected for the next several hours.

Sky 10 flew over the tracks near Oakland Park Boulevard around 10:25 a.m. as first responders surveyed the area.

Authorities confirmed that Oakland Park Boulevard is closed in both directions just west of Interstate 95.

They urged drivers to seek alternate routes to avoid delays.

Authorities said traffic homicide unit detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office were notified and are investigating the circumstances surrounding this crash.
