HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — Florida Power & Light gave students at Hallandale Magnet High School a hands-on boost in aviation and STEM education Monday with the unveiling of a newly renovated learning space.

The high school was among 20 schools to receive facility upgrades as part of FPL’s effort to expand access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.
The renovated aeronautical STEM lab includes flight simulators, updated computers and other technology designed to give students greater exposure to aviation-related careers.
Jay Schwartz, an adjunct professor involved with the program, said the cost of pursuing aviation careers can be a significant obstacle for young people.

“The biggest challenge to get young people into aviation is the financial barrier,” Schwartz said. “FPL has allowed us to break through that barrier, to allow these young minds to pursue great things in the future.”
FPL said the upgrades are intended to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields by providing modern facilities and hands-on learning opportunities.
The company said its investment is aimed at helping prepare and inspire the next generation of students interested in aviation, technology and other STEM careers.
