Flooding causes travel delays across Broward County

Heavy thunderstorms caused widespread flooding and travel delays across parts of Broward County on Friday, with water covering streets near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and prompting drivers to slow down.

A Local 10 News crew was at the intersection of Southeast Second Avenue and Seventh Street in Dania Beach, where vehicles moved cautiously through standing water. Some cars appeared partially submerged, while a school bus navigated the flooded roadway.

The conditions extended to the airport, where video showed flooding in areas used by travelers and motorists. Drivers were advised to use caution and expect delays, particularly on side streets.

In Oakland Park, a Local 10 News crew visited flooded streets along Oakland Park Boulevard, Northeast Sixth Avenue and Prospect Road. Water accumulated along both sides of the roadway, with motorists driving slowly through flooded sections.

One driver was left stranded and had to push his own vehicle out of the floodwaters.

Others took the risk of driving through the moving water, while some parked vehicles had water rising above their tires.

A crash involving a white pickup truck and a blue car was reported near the flooded roadway. It was not immediately clear whether the weather contributed to the collision or whether either vehicle became disabled because of the flooding.

Flooding extended to Pompano Beach, where a resident shared surveillance video showing water surrounding his property. The water rose high enough for orange barricades to be seen floating in the flooded area.

There was a ground stop at the airport, but it was later lifted.

The weather also disrupted school transportation across Broward County. School bus drop-offs were delayed, and some drivers took additional precautions by avoiding areas where flooding was too severe.

Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Howard Hepburn warned parents that students could be dropped off later than usual because of the weather.

Some drivers became stuck in floodwaters, prompting nearby residents to come out and help push vehicles to safety.

As the rain continued Friday afternoon, motorists were urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways when possible and to proceed slowly where water had accumulated.

No road closures had been reported in the Oakland Park area at the time, despite flooding in several locations.
