Package dispute led to armed standoff at Wilton Manors apartment complex, cops say

WILTON MANORS, Fla. — New details have emerged from an arrest report obtained by Local 10 News on Saturday involving a Wilton Manors man who police said barricaded himself inside his home after an encounter with an Amazon delivery driver earlier this week.

Wilton Manors police identified the man as 57-year-old George Manuel Mandes.

According to the report, the incident began Thursday at about 4:19 p.m. when the Amazon delivery driver was making several deliveries at the Manor Grove Apartments in Wilton Manors.

Police said the driver delivered packages to different floors of the apartment complex, including one package that was left at Mandes’ home.

The driver told police he later realized the package had been delivered to the wrong apartment, just a few doors away. He returned to retrieve it and delivered it to the correct address, according to the report.

The report states the driver told police that after he returned to his delivery van, Mandes approached him and accused him of stealing his package.

According to the report, Mandes then pulled a “small black handgun” from his waistband and pointed it at the driver.

Police said Mandes then barricaded himself inside his home, prompting a large law enforcement response at the condominium complex.

Neighbor Paul Baker said he was stunned by what happened.

“I couldn’t believe it. He’s such a nice guy. He’s always been very friendly to me,” he said. “I wonder if I have it on camera.”

Police said they eventually arrested Mandes after he gave them consent to search his apartment, where they recovered a gun.

Jail records show Mandes is facing one count each of aggravated assault with a firearm without intent to kill and improper exhibition of a firearm.

Mandes posted bond and was no longer listed as an inmate in Broward County jail records as of Saturday morning.
