Byron Donalds, Angie Nixon hold campaign events in South Florida

MIAMI — The political temperature is rising with major candidates making critical stops in South Florida this weekend.

Republican gubernatorial nominee Byron Donalds and his running mate, State Sen. Brian Avila, attended a general election kickoff event at the Miami-Dade GOP headquarters on Saturday.

“What’s at stake is the future of Florida,” said Donalds. “We’ve become the example to the other 49 states. We are the best state in America. Everyone knows that.”

Donalds is facing off against David Jolly, a former Republican congressman and critic of President Trump who left the GOP.

Jolly explained why he entered the race in a recent campaign video.

“You deserve a governor who’s gouging to put you first,” he said. “Because we’re all worried about the cost of housing, health care, food and gas.”

Current State Rep. and Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Angie Nixon launched a South Florida canvassing event this weekend, with a rally Saturday in Little Havana.

“I am someone who wants to add accountability and transparency to Washington DC,” she said. “I want to make sure I’m helping Floridians across the state.”

Nixon is running against Republican Senator Ashley Moody.

While in Orlando last week, Moody discussed her work in Washington.

“I have a great track record already of delivering and getting bills passed for Floridians,” said Moody. “I was the most productive freshman senator.”

Both Donalds and Nixon had several South Florida stops on Saturday, the first of an expected many as November’s election day draws closer.
