Delays, cancellations continue at MIA following Amazon cargo plane crash that killed 5 people

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Numerous flights were delayed or canceled Monday morning at Miami International Airport, a day after an Amazon cargo plane went off a runway and crashed, killing five people and injuring five others.

According to Flight Aware, 100 domestic flights arriving or departing from MIA were delayed and 55 were canceled.

Airport officials confirmed that two of the airport’s four runways are currently open.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, a Boeing 767 cargo plane overran a runway at MIA around 2 p.m. Sunday.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said several vehicles were struck by the plane near the 2100 block of Northwest 42nd Avenue.

Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said during a press conference that five people were killed and five others were hospitalized with unknown injuries.

Three of the injured people were listed in critical condition, authorities said.

According to officials, Prime Air Flight 7598 originated from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Airport officials said the plane was disabled after going off the northwest end of the airport’s diagonal runway.

A ground stop was issued after the crash and all runways were closed for hours, officials confirmed.

An airport official said one of MIA’s four runways reopened around 4:15 p.m., and a second was opened around 30 minutes later.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash and officials with the NTSB are expected to release more details at a press conference Monday.

“This is a fast-moving situation and we’re still gathering details,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement Sunday. “We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened. Right now, our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved. We’re doing everything we can to support those affected.”

Those flying into or out of MIA Monday are urged to check with their airline for their flight status before arriving at the airport.
