NTSB provides latest updates on investigation into MIA cargo plane crash

MIAMI — The investigation into the fatal cargo plane crash in Miami-Dade County continued on Tuesday.

According to officials, five people were killed and five others were injured when a Boeing 767-300 overtook a runway at Miami International Airport shortly before 2 p.m. on Sunday and struck a white 2012 Ford E-150 Econoline van and a Toyota Corolla Cross LE.

Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz held a press conference Tuesday morning, where the identities of the five deceased victims were made public.

The injured victims, as well as the plane’s two pilots, were also identified.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board remain at the scene conducting their investigation into the circumstances that led up to the crash.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy held a press conference shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday to provide the latest updates.

Homandy said that the pilots and crew would be interviewed on Wednesday.

She also said that while flight recorders were recovered with several hours of footage, the audio would not be released until after the pilots were interviewed.

Investigators say that data could help reconstruct the plane’s final moments, including its speed, engine performance and what was happening inside the cockpit.

“Thirty seconds before the end of the recording, the nose landing gear and the right man main landing gear touched down, and the ground speed was 158 knots,” said NTSB lead investigator Chihoon Shin. “Twenty-three seconds before the end of the recording, brakes were applied. Fifteen seconds before the end of recording, brakes were released at a ground speed of 120 knots. Throttles increased to values consistent with a go-around thrust.”

Additionally, officials said a third runway had been allowed to reopen at MIA.
