Plantation High School lockdown lifted after commotion over gun, cops say

PLANTATION, Fla, — Plantation High School was placed on lockdown Thursday after a comment about a gun on campus prompted a commotion, according to Plantation police.

Initially, authorities said a there was fear of a gun on campus after a fight occurred, but officers later clarified that there was no fight or evidence a gun was ever on campus.

“The investigation determined that no fight had occurred and no firearm was ever on the Plantation High School campus,” police wrote in a statement. They said officers searched the school grounds after the report of a possible weapon but did not find a gun.

No injuries were reported.

Police said, “somebody had mentioned something about a gun, which was relayed to another person, which was relayed to a teacher. At the same time a large group of people were walking in the hallway and might’ve heard the same thing and they all started running.”

The incident initially prompted a police response and perimeter around the school as officers investigated a report that a student may have been in possession of a weapon. Police said the student was located immediately, but no weapon was found.

Broward County Public Schools confirmed that the school, located at 6901 NW 16th St., received an “all-clear” from law enforcement and resumed its normal schedule.

Sky 10 was over the scene at about 1:20 p.m. as police established a perimeter around the campus. During the investigation, no one was allowed to enter or leave the area while officers searched for evidence of a weapon.

Once officers confirmed there was no threat to students or staff, police said they cleared the perimeter and lifted the lockdown.
