Heavy rain leaves Hallandale Beach side streets flooded, residents navigating standing water

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — Residents in parts of Hallandale Beach were navigating flooded streets and parking lots Wednesday as rain continued to fall, leaving some searching for creative ways to stay out of the standing water.

Along Southeast Second Street, water had receded somewhat, but significant ponding remained as more rain came down.

Parents were seen carrying children on their backs to reach the bus stop and even lifting them directly onto the bus so their feet wouldn’t have to touch the water.

Drivers also faced challenges getting to work, with even smaller vehicles pushing through inches of water as drivers tried to determine the best routes around flooded areas.

For some residents, the first challenge was simply reaching their cars.

At an apartment complex on Southeast Second Street, residents made their way through a flooded parking lot.

“Surprised, I can’t believe it,” resident Juan Rocha said.

Rocha said he still needed to get to work despite the conditions.

“When you hear something, you know it’s raining real hard. But we’ll see. I’ve gotta go to work. I’m gonna be late,” he said.

Resident Vivian Novicic said the side streets were more difficult to navigate than the main road.

“The side streets, US-1 looks better but you’ve gotta get out there first. That’s the thing,” Novicic said.

Federal Highway appeared clear and elevated compared with Southeast Second Street, where even a small dip in elevation led to flooding.

Residents and drivers traveling from areas including Dania Beach, Hollywood, Hallandale Beach and Aventura were advised to be prepared for flooding on streets that typically experience problems during heavy rainfall.
