Beach bummer: Stinky sargassum comes to South Florida shores ― just in time for holiday weekend

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — There was plenty of twisted seaweed, known as sargassum, along the shores of Broward County beaches over the holiday weekend.

As seen from Sky 10, large amounts of the brown seaweed has washed up along the shores of Hollywood Beach and Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Crews come to the beach every morning to clean it up.

Officials said this year could be a record year for the amount that shows up.

Sargassum lives in the ocean and is vital for marine life, but when it washes up on shore, it dries and has an incredibly bad odor.

It’s an issue for tourism and cities and towns who have to pay to clean it up.

While the holiday weekend may not be the best timing, it’s something locals know they need to get used to, as the seaweed will be around through the fall.
