Miami-Dade deputies locate vehicle in hit-and-run that killed 10-year-old girl, injured brother

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Detectives have located the vehicle involved in a northwest Miami-Dade hit-and-run that killed a 10-year-old girl and left her older brother hospitalized, authorities announced Saturday.

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Traffic Homicide Unit detectives located the vehicle involved in the crash and it is now in the agency’s custody.

No arrest has been made and investigators are urging the driver involved to come forward and turn themselves in.

The development comes days after siblings Peyton and Brent were struck while riding an e-bike near Northwest 117th Street and Northwest Seventh Avenue Wednesday night.

According to MDSO, deputies responded to the hit-and-run crash at approximately 8:40 p.m.

Investigators said the driver of a silver or gray 2009-2012 Nissan Versa was traveling northbound on Northwest Seventh Avenue and approaching Northwest 117th Street when the driver made a left turn onto 117th Street.

The vehicle struck Peyton and Brent as they traveled along Northwest 117th Street on the e-bike, authorities said.

Investigators said the driver then fled the scene in an unknown direction.

Deputies arrived to find both children unresponsive and lying in the roadway.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the siblings to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

Peyton died from her injuries Thursday.

Patrice, the children’s aunt, told Local 10 News this week that Peyton and Brent were inseparable.

“They always were together. Always were together,” she said.

Patrice remembered 10-year-old Peyton as a cheerleader who was full of life.

“She was a cheerleader, you know, full of life. Everybody loved her,” Patrice said. “And now for this to happen and no one to come forward, it’s just senseless.”

Brent remained hospitalized Friday following surgery and a makeshift memorial of candles, balloons and other tributes was set up near the intersection where the siblings were struck.

Their family pleaded with the driver to surrender.

“They need to turn themselves in, period,” Patrice said. “Just turn yourself in.”

“I just hope somebody just comes forward,” she added. “Have a heart, please. Because this could have been anybody’s kids.”
